Role of the Clinical Risk Adviser

As suggested by international best practice, an integrated approach to Clinical Risk Management and Claims Management is adopted at the CIS.

The Clinical Risk Advisers (CRA's) have responsibility for providing advice and support to healthcare facilities within designated geographical areas, DHGRMF and in certain specialist areas, reflecting their individual experience and clinical backgrounds. They provide advice and assistance to all clinical facilities covered by the CIS and work with risk management and other personnel at enterprise level, to support patient safety. This includes encouraging the early notification of incidents and "near-misses" and identifying local and national trends in relation to incidents and claims.

On a more specific remit, the Clinical Risk Advisers also have a brief to:

  • Advise and assist in the development of a National Clinical Risk management strategy.
  • Analyse data on clinical incidents and claims on STARSWeb database, identify trends and follow up on incidents.
  • Review in detail clinical claims from a risk perspective.
  • Support Enterprises with their risk management process.
  • Promote and publicise best practice in patient safety by means of quarterly newsletters, seminars and educational initiatives.
