Goalpost Safety in Schools

Over recent years, there have been a number of child fatalities, both in Ireland and in the UK, arising from the unsafe use of goal frames by schools and sports clubs.
The State Claims Agency carried out an assessment of goal frames used in a small sample of Community and Comprehensive Schools in order to better define the extent of the risk. The report below documents the findings of this assessment. It sets out the risk management recommendations, which should be followed when purchasing, installing, erecting, dismantling and maintaining goal frames including the appropriate and safe use of anchors. In the absence of technical design and safety standards for GAA and rugby goal frames, this report provides suggested design specifications for the main types of goal frames used in these codes. There are also reputable manufacturers and suppliers of goal posts in Ireland, who certify the goal posts they supply as being safe.
